Working with Children in Grades 1 - 3

I hosted a workshop at a local school yesterday as one of the school's winter electives. I hadn't been too clear as to what the ages of my participants were - when I learned that it was a collection of grade 1 - 3 students I had reservations as to how well they would do with the project I had planned.
I was pleasantly surprised at how well they did. I wasn't sure if the "Doodle Dragon" would be too hard or tricky for their little fingers to handle - they did amazing! They totally took up the task of completing the Dragon. They didn't lose interest either. I was encouraged when the children even chose to remain indoors when their "recess" was offered up to them.
Of course things wouldn't have run as smoothly if I didn't have the help of two very lovely ladies, a devoted parent volunteer and the school's French teacher - their help was awesome! Their feed back even more affirming. Madame acknowledged how "focused" the students were. She also felt I was quite organized - which really made my day. (Being organized has been a challenge for me at times) So, it was a good thing to hear from a person with much teaching experience and who knows what it takes to be organized.
I asked the children to suggest projects they would like to make the next time I return - 2 weeks from now - the majority vote was for a butterfly.
Even though I cannot reveal names of the ladies who helped or the school I attended - I just want to offer up my thanks for their delightful enthusiasm for my craft and for helping to make the workshop a real success.
We had time to spare at the end - so the children were also given the opportunity to have story time too - featuring one of my favourite childrens author and illustrator - Barbara Reid. I was glad I brought those books along:)
